I am reviving Latin Antique, a typeface that was created by various foundries under different names. The letters have flare serifs, a wide shape, and low contrast in weight within the individual letters, which gives it a unique, old-fashioned look. The letters have short ascenders and descenders, as well as subtle variations in weight, embodies both elegance and utility. My goal with this revival is to reintroduce Latin Antique’s vintage charm into contemporary design while enhancing its accessibility and versatility. Through careful refinements, I aim to modernize its structure for digital and print use without compromising its decorative appeal. Adjusting contrast, refining serifs, and optimizing spacing will allow for better readability across various platforms.

This typeface is designed to be used in both body text and display, making it flexible for different kinds of design projects. It has a classic and vintage feel, which makes it perfect for shop signage, especially for vintage shops, cafés, bakeries, and restaurants that want to bring out a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. It also works well for packaging design, especially for beverages, food, or handcrafted goods. The old-style charm of this typeface helps create a sense of tradition and quality, making it a great choice for brands that want to highlight their history or craftsmanship. Beyond that, this typeface can be used in editorial design, posters, and branding, especially for projects that need a balance between decorative personality and readability.

ABOUT

This site documents student work from an advanced typeface design course taught by Christopher Sleboda and open to students in the MFA Graphic Design and BFA Graphic Design programs at Boston University, as well as students in the School of Visual Arts—including those in the new Visual Narrative MFA. The course provides a rigorous introduction to the conceptual and technical processes involved in creating original digital typefaces. Students explore the foundations of letterform construction—including structure, proportion, counterform, spacing, and rhythm—while developing their own typefaces.

Through research, sketching, and the use of digital tools like RoboFont, students engage with typographic history and contemporary practice to design functional and expressive typefaces. Each student produces a working font and a printed type specimen. This site showcases the results of that work, reflecting diverse design approaches and a deep engagement with the craft of type design.
